Each one of us have things we agree with, issues we feel strongly about and causes we champion. But what about those things we disagree with or feel so passionate against that just the thought boils our blood.
Its great to design for good causes, whether its the environment, promoting good health or encouraging love & not war. However, if you were asked to promote a brand which went against your values or what you believe to be good, would you do it for the sake of getting the contract?
For example, I have a sister who has a very BIG problem with cigarettes. She is so against it that she gets really worked up every time she passes a smoker in the street. She may say something at times but usually she just mutters to herself and comes home to give me an ear full of how inconsiderate they are.
I questioned whether I would create packaging to promote cigarettes or even alcohol. I mean some of the alcohol ads you see are highly imaginative, creative and attractive. Why not create an amazing piece of graphic design for a substance which helps you lose your senses and was the cause of more than a million crimes in the UK in 2009/2010.
You could argue that it is the responsibility of the consumer of how much he/she drinks. True, but do we not have a responsibility also?
